You can learn Spanish in Panama at three different locations, in Bocas del Toro, an island in the Caribbean, in Boquete, a mountain village, and in the capital, Panama City. It is easy to combine studying Spanish in two or three places because the prices and accommodation options are the same in all three locations. So come and learn Spanish in Panama and combine different schools!
Bocas del Toro
The school in Bocas del Toro is located in the center of the village. You can choose between a group course of four hours a day and a private course of two or four hours a day. The groups have a maximum of six students but on average there are four students per group. In case there is no group with the same level of Spanish as yours, you will receive two hours of private classes a day instead. The classes are held at the veranda or the garden of the school.
A couple of times a week they organize activities that you can take part in for an additional fee. The week of classes is always concluded in a festive way with a barbecue: the students buy the food and the school arranges the drinks. There is free Wi-Fi internet available at the school.
In the standard package the accommodation is in the school residence in a shared room. If you travel together with a friend and like to share a room that’s possible for $3 per person per night more than the price of a shared room. If you prefer to have your own room then there is a surcharge of $75 a week. You can use the schools’ kitchen and there is a veranda (yes: with hammocks!). Please note: the accommodation at the school residence is limited and the school is very popular under young backpackers, so book well in advance. We can also arrange accommodation in a ‘bed and breakfast’; you will have your own room with a Panamanian family and will get a daily breakfast. The additional charge is $50 a week.
You can also learn Spanish in Panama and do volunteer work after your course. There are several volunteer projects in Bocas and surroundings click on the link to go to the volunteer page.
How to get there
There are several ways to get to Bocas del Toro. You can fly to Panama City or San José Costa Rica, The distance to Bocas del Toro is nearly the same from both airports. So check what is cheaper at the time you want to go: flying to Costa Rica or to Panama.
Flying to Panama City:
We offer a complete transfer package with transfer from the airport in Panama City (PTY) to the hostel of the school in Panama City where you will stay in a bed in a shared dorm for one night. The next day you will take a transfer back to the international airport for your flight to Bocas. It’s an easy walk to school. The complete package with 2 taxi-transfers, 1 night hotel and the local flight (one way) has a total price of $290. You can also just book the transfer from the airport to the accommodation in Panama City with us. This transfer will cost you $40. Or only the transfer from the airport + one night accommodation in Panama City and the next day the transfer from the hotel to the bus station, for which the total price is $95.
Flying to San José in Costa Rica:
We offer our so called San José package ($80) with a transfer from the airport to a hotel in San José. There you will stay for one night and the next day a taxi will take you to the bus station where you will get your own bus ticket to the border with Panama ($12). You will cross the border and from there you can find taxi buses ($10) and a boat ($4) to Bocas. Total cost to get to Bocas del Toro if you travel from Costa Rica is around $105.
We can add the San José package with an airport transfer and one night in a hotel in San José, in that case the total price from the transfer from the airport in San José to Bocas del Toro the next day comes down to $150. There is also the possibility to fly with Natureair from San José to Bocas del Toro. There are four flights a week (one on Sunday) and a one way ticket costs about $200 including tax.
We also have another very nice transport option with Caribe Shuttle. You travel from a hotel in San José or from the airport via Puerto Viejo to Bocas del Toro. On the way, in Puerto Viejo, you will get a good lunch in a nice hotel, Banana Azul and there will be time to swim either in the swimming pool of the hotel or in the sea. The whole trip including transport in shuttle bus, lunch, assistance with crossing the border, transportation to Almirante and the boat trip from Almirante to Bocas del Toro costs $70.
Combination trip You can combine the Spanish courses in the schools in Turrialba, Puerto Viejo, Bocas del Toro and Boquete.
The school is located just outside Boquete in a beautiful landscaped garden with banana and orange trees, which attract a lot of hummingbirds. In the garden there are a few ‘ranchos’, these are with palm leaf covered open spaces where the Spanish classes are being held. You can choose between a group course of 4 classes a day and a private course of two or four hour classes a day. The groups have a maximum of six students but on average there are four students per group. In case that, at the moment of your stay, there is no group with your exact same level of Spanish you will receive two hours of private classes a day instead. Near the school is a bus stop where there are frequent buses that will take you to Boquete in a couple of minutes.
This location is not suited for people who want to go out every night; then Bocas del Toro is a better option. The teachers in Boquete use the same teaching methods as in Bocas and Turrialba so the classes are consistent and connect well. And when you book a combination of schools the school coordinator will mail your exact level of Spanish to the next school. It is a great idea to combine various locations! The school organizes activities on a regular basis for which they ask a small fee. There is free Wifi at the school.
The accommodation options
Room in the school residence
In the standard package, for both the private and group course, we have chosen the shared accommodation in the school residence. If you travel together with a friend and like to share a room that’s possible for $3 per person per night more than the price of a shared room (dormitory). Would you prefer your own room then there is an extra charge per week of $75. In the living room of the school the students often watch movies together either in English or Spanish with subtitles or they play games together. The evening meals the students usually prepare together, sharing the costs. You can also easily go out to eat in Boquete for just a couple of dollars.
You can stay at a host family where you will get two meals a day and your own room. Extra cost for this option: $80 per week. With three meals a day the surcharge is $100 per week.

The next day the driver will pick you up again and bring you to the airport for your flight to David (2 flights a day: one in the morning and one in the afternoon). At arrival in David a driver will wait for you again and drive you to Boquete, on the way he familiarizes you with the area, and takes you to the school. The cost of this package with three transfers, one night in Panama City and a one way flight from Panama City to David is $295.
Do you just want to be picked up in David, we can arrange the transfer for $40.
Combination trip The school also has branches in Puerto Viejo and Turrialba in Costa Rica. Tip: combine the various destinations.
Your can choose to take a group Spanish course of 4 hours a day, or private classes of 2 or 4 hours a day. Groups have maximum 6 students but on average there will be 4 students per group. Accommodation is based on a shared room. Would you prefer your own private room it’s possible for a surcharge of $75 per week. Daily breakfast is included at this hotel.
The location of the hotel is great, 5 minutes walking distance fo the ‘cinta costera’ this is the boulevard by the sea. You are also walking distance from the Casco Viejo, the old part of town.
What is special is that this hotel has a climbing wall. It is great location for athletic students anyway, especially at night a lot of people go running, cycling, and skating.
